Description

The Able Social Media App is an app to ease the communication between people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).

The app integrates a set of existing technologies to create an open-source and context aware Accessibility Layer which when integrated with current and future social media applications, it can improve the daily life of people with IDD by understanding their personal situations and helping them to interact with the information society.

During the Able to Include project users made it clear that they wanted to use ‘real’ social media applications, the versions their friends are also using. So the project came up with an app allowing for use of the complete social media apps.

However, we made a few short videos available within the Able Social Media App from the SafeSurfing Project  led by our partner Inclusion Europe:

  • What should I shareSafesurfing
  • Use the internet safely
  • Internet things I need to know
  • Use mobile devices safely
  • Be safe on Facebook and social media

These videos provide caregivers a means to talk with their users about the issues in their use of social media.

Now our users can work with Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Twitter etc, just like their peers. Messages they want to read can be read aloud, simplified or translated into pictos. They just need to select a block of text, and use the service strip to decide how they want to digest it.

When they decide to have it simplified, or translated into pictos, there always is the opportunity to touch the text, or the picto, to have it read aloud.

Simplification gives the following result:

And an example of a translation into pictos of part of a Facebook message:

Note that when a user composes a message in pictos, people reading the message will be able to see it in Dutch, English or Spanish, using the Picto2Text service. A carer can personalise the app for individual users:
