The most important result of the project will be the accessibility layer and the open source Software Developer Kit (SDK) that will foster the introduction of a communications accessibility layer for people with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in any software development, ensuring that the solution is sustainable in the long-term. The model is based on open source and open innovation. Its success will depend on the ability to create an active community around this project, so that the accessibility layer may be used by hundreds of software developers to make their existing and future applications accessible. This philosophy will also allow the open community to improve the accessibility layer and adapt it to future needs or restrictions.
The selected exploitation model is based on the open-source accessibility layer being offered free of charge, but the services offered around may be sold by the technical partners (UPF, KU Leuven, Thomas More and MAC). Another service that the technical partners will offer is the inclusion of new technologies developed by their customers in the accessibility layer.
Partners will lead this process, using the accessibility layer of Able to Include to make their own existing applications accessible to people with IDD. They will also provide services to third parties, such as the implementation of new technologies within the accessibility layer or the creation of an accessible version of the app/website of their customers. This latter is a very interesting service that can be offered:
- To large or small software companies willing to reach a bigger audience.
- To associations of users with IDD that may be particularly interested in making certain applications/ websites/ programmes accessible to people with IDD.
